Inlays
Inlays are an option for restorations in the back part of the mouth (premolars and molars).
Inlays are created in two appointments. The first appointment includes preparing the tooth for the restoration, taking an impression of the tooth to send to the lab, and placing a temporary material in the tooth. The second appointment involves the removal of the temporary and the placement of the permanent inlay. There is some mild tenderness in the area of treatment, but patients can work and return to regular activities immediately following the appointment.
Gold is an excellent material for inlays because it does not discolor over time, it does not expand or contract with changing temperatures and because it is a relatively soft restorative material. A properly taken care of inlay may last as long as 20 years.
Resin is a second option for inlays for those who would rather have tooth colored restorations. Resin inlays last, on average, 10-15 years.
